Below are three series that I love immensely and have shaped me as an author. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but it does give some insight into what I like to read. My writing has also been greatly influenced by movies and video games, but that is a whole separate topic. 🙂
The Dark Tower series is probably my all time favorite book series. The way King weaved our reality into that of the Gunslinger blew my mind the first time I read it and redefined what I thought was possible with fiction.
When I started the Gunslinger, I had no idea what I was in for. I hadn't read any reviews and barely knew what the story was about, but I was instantly hooked and finished the Dark Tower books shortly after.
Someday I will go back and read them again, but for now, I want to preserve my initial feelings and relish the impact the books had on my life.
The Wheel of Time is such an epic series! I felt it did an awesome job of weaving so many realities, characters, and story arcs together (similar to the Dark Tower series). This shaped my storytelling methodology, and has had a lasting impact on who I am as an author and reader.
Unfortunately, I haven't finished The Wheel of Time. Despite his leaving copious notes, when Jordan died, I felt like the series lost something vital, and I just couldn't continue it. Maybe someday I'll go back.
The Saga of Seven Suns is one of the lesser known books on my list, but it was my first exposure to space opera / epic science fiction.
I love the way Anderson weaved so much detail into the story, how he crafted characters that were so believable and intriguing.
The timeline, scale, and scope of these books were so unusual and unique to me and were probably my biggest inspiration when I started the Dawn Saga.
